Project: Wildern School Swimming Pool
Client: Kier Construction
Service: Structural Engineering
Kier Construction approached Cowan Consultancy to provide engineering services in relation to the refurbishment and transformation works to Wildern School swimming pool. The existing 40 year old structure was looking tired and in much need of an overhaul. The proposals were for a new roof and to create a 60 person poolside viewing and seating area.
The new roof was to be supported on purlin rails which are fixed to a braced bay steel frame structure.
The challenge was to modify and enhance the existing foundations to adequately support the new structure. This was overcome in some cases, by widening the existing foundations with additional concrete, fixed into the existing with dowel bars. In other areas, reinforced concrete spreader beams had to be designed in order to spread the concentrated loads from the steel frame over the existing foundations. Being able to utilise as much of the existing foundations as possible kept build costs down to a minimum.
Cowan Consultancy also provided temporary works details, including in relation to some areas where asbestos removal was required.
