Project: Redevelopment of The Savoy Country Club
Client: Planning Solutions UK
Architect: CAST
Contractor: MCM/John Peck
This popular chalet style holiday venue was to be upgraded and modernised to provide a premium and more contemporary leisure complex in the New England style. Comprising the new building of 160 privately owned units and the refurbishment of the leisure centre with health spa, the greatest engineering challenge was to ensure that the planned accommodation and facilities were realised within the pre-set budget, whilst not detracting from the Architect’s creativity and vision.
The best example of this was evident in the conversions carried out in the swimming pool area, which was to be enclosed within a glulam and glass structure. The supports to the new roof were to be in close proximity to the existing pool wall. We were able to show that the loads from the roof structure could be ably carried on the existing pool wall and foundations, thereby saving the client considerable expense on new foundation works.
Similarly, with the internal layout of the remodeled chalets, we were able to achieve the open effect required by the Architect by placing support columns within existing partitions.
